Over 4 million spent from waqf fund for awarding conference by IMF
The decision to confer the award was mocked by many on social media, particularly by Maldivian scholar Sheikh Nishan Adam
Approximately MVR 4,061,496.21 million would have been spent in the organization of the conference

Controversies have risen that over MVR 4 million was spent for the conference hosted by the International Moderation Forum to confer an award of recognition to President Yameen Abdul Gayoom for his involvement in promoting the true message of Islam.

RaajjeMV had received a copy of the letter signed by Islamic Minister Dr Ahmed Ziyad Bagir which reads that an international conference was to be held from the 14th to the 16th of April 2018 in Kurumba Maldives in partnership with Jordan's International Moderation Forum, Maldives National Counter Terrorism Center, Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), Maldives Police Service (MPS) amd Ministry of Islamic Affairs.

The letter reads that the conference aimed at preventing acts of terrorism, to conserve Islamic principles and to bring together muslim nations to help in jointly managing these issues and progressing with Islamic institutions.

According to the letter, officials of ministerial levels from 18 countries, scholars and senior officials of 12 intenational Islamic institutions were to take part in the conference.

The letter adds that approximately MVR 4,061,496.21 million would have been spent in the organization of the conference.

It also appealed on the waqf fund committee to organize the money under the committee's guidelines if possible.

The waqf fund endows charity under Islamic law, for Islamic puposes.

After former Prime Minister of Sudan Dr Sadiq Al Siddiq Abdul Rahman Al Mahdi conferred the award to Maldives President, he had come under fire on social media, with Maldivian scholar Adam Nishan Bin Ali Adam voicing his concern over the matter on his official facebook page.
