President Abdulla Yameen’s top official in the international community, Foreign Minister Dr. Mohamed Asim has been having a busy few days.
Minister Asim, who is currently in New York for the High-Level Meeting on Peace Building and Sustaining Peace, has been campaigning for support as the Maldives attempts to win a seat at the United Nations Security Council, for the term 2019-2020.
The foreign ministry revealed that the minister met with a number of permanent representatives of the United Nations on Saturday, where he discussed areas of mutual interest, as well as sought support in the country’s bid to win a seat at the Council.

While the High-Level meeting is to take place at the UN headquarters on 24 and 25 April, Minister Asim is set to speak at the meeting, as well as other several important UN events.
While Maldives and the Republic of Congo established diplomatic relations on Friday, with a Joint Communiqué signing ceremony held at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations, Minister Asim was present there as well.

Prior to heading to New York on Friday, the foreign minister was in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
During this trip, the minister met with his counterpart, Igor Crnadakm, and discussed on ways ‘to strengthen bilateral relations and increase people-to-people contact’. Both parties also gave a joint press conference on Tuesday, where they spoke on the importance ‘of formalizing cooperation between the two foreign ministries through an MoU’. He concluded this trip on April 18.

Back in March, the minister traveled to Kuwait as the President’s envoy, where he met with his Kuwaiti counterpart and senior officials of the Kuwait Fund.
