President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has said that due to the negligence of 'dysfunctional' state institutions, human rights defenders are facing massive challenges.
Speaking at the National Human Rights Conference taking place in Nepal, HRCM President Aminath Eenas said that the challenges being faced in the process of protecting human rights in the Maldives are a direct result of the negligence of 'dysfunctional' state institutions, in efforts to enhance human rights in the country.
In the conference joined by 50 officials from a total of 20 countries, Eenas spoke on the hindrances in rectifying human rights situations faced in the country and added that this is a result of negligence from government-run institutions.
Eenas said this was the reason a National Human Rights Institution is of 'paramount importance' to the country.

Countries partaking in this conference include India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia as well as Myanmar.
This conference is organized by Nepal's Human Rights Commission in partnership with Asia Pacific Forum, United Nations Development Program and Nepal Governance Facility.
The yearly conference brings together prominent human rights figures from different nations to address the emerging issues and everyday challenges they face in the battle to improve human rights by law practitioners and human rights leaders.
This conference was instigated by Nepalese President Bidhya Devi Bhandari.
