Police have warned the joint opposition to not hold the anti-government rally Friday and urged citizens to not join illegal gatherings to overthrow the government.

Speaking in a press briefing on Wednesday, Police Spokesperson Ahmed Shifan said that they have received information from credible sources of a mass opposition gathering scheduled for Friday. He said the only objective of this rally is to create chaos and that the police service will not permit such disruptions of public peace.

“Precautionary measures will be taken to maintain public peace and constitutional measures will be taken against such rebellious movements if necessary” Shifan said.

The spokesperson further said that the organizers of the mass rally are being arrested and investigated.

Islanders have also been warned against asking boat captains to transport them to the capital city, saying that vessels registered under fishing in the country does not have the authorization to do so.

Shifan added that although the opposition had even previously set dates for mass protests to overthrow the government, this time the police service will not permit disorder and that police forces will be fully prepared to take action on Friday.

After having warned the opposition, Shifan ended the press briefing without giving media the chance for queries.
