SoE arrestees request meeting with Acting CP Nawaz and ACP Hamdhoon
A 15-day state of emergency was declared on 5th February, which has been extended to 45 days
A total of 44 individuals are currently detained under the state of emergency decree
Most of those arrested under the state of emergency are accused of attempting to overthrow a lawfully elected government

All detained under the ongoing state of emergency has requested to meet with Acting Commissioner of Police, Abdulla Nawaz and his deputy, Hamdhoon Rasheed.

RaajjeMV understands that they are requesting to meet with them to share concerns regarding their treatment during incarceration.

A total of 44 individuals are currently detained under the state of emergency decree, including former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed, Justice Ali Hameed, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s deputy Mohamed Shifaz and Jumhooree Party (JP)’s deputy leader Abdulla Riyaz.

In addition, a number of parliamentarians, senior officials and activists of the opposition, police and military officers are arrested under the state of emergency decree as well.

Lawyers confirmed to RaajjeMV that they have sent letters to the Maldives Police Service, requesting a meeting with the two, as per their client’s wishes. However, they did not disclose a reason for requesting the meeting.

Most of those arrested under the state of emergency are accused of attempting to overthrow a lawfully elected government.
