The protest Joint Opposition parties held on Friday evening has effectively concluded with a prodigious crowd.

Joint Opposition party members have been taking to the streets every weekend since the 1st of February after President Yameen refused to obey a constitutionally passed Supreme court ruling issuing the release of high-profile political prisoners and prominent figures in the political sphere.

The protesters are basically calling for the resignation of President Yameen, the lifting of the unconstitutional State of Emergency and for the release of all detained under it.

Likewise, the opposition held a mass gathering on the 9th of March, Friday with an abundant crowd that grew with passing hours. The protest began at 4:45 pm with a plentiful number of women having taken part.

Although the few police officers active in the area had put in their best efforts to control the crowd, their attempts were unsuccessful.

Protesters had inexhaustibly continued their demonstration until sundown.

While Special Operations officers were seen disbanding the crowd, using excessive force in previous rallies that were held over the weekends, this Friday SO officers had been active in the area for a lesser time and had not attempted to use unnecessary power to disperse rallies.

Speaking at the gathering, Male’ City Mayor Shifa Mohamed said that although President Yameen claims himself to be a leader, the citizens under him are calling for the end of his rule adding that opposition demonstrations will go forth.

Also speaking at the rally, Cenral-Henveiru MP Ali Azim said that noticeable changes are seen from police officers and soldiers and that the president’s downfall is near.

He mentioned that it is important to observe where the president is now standing after the opposition’s reform work kicked off.

The opposition concluded today’s protest with the message that they will continue to take to the streets in their reform work and that the demonstrations calling for President Yameen’s resignation will not come to an end.
