Gan Island’s Council President Shiyam said that police officers had obstructed the protesters under the direct order of MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla.

Those arrested at Gan Island of Laamu Atoll at a protest have been released.

Five Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) members were arrested among the islanders in Gan who took to the streets on Friday evening along with Laamu Atoll Council President Abdulla Shareef, to call for the resignation of President Abdulla Yameen and the implementation of a Supreme Court order issued on the 1st of February ruling to release political prisoners

After having blocked the path of protesters, police arrested Shareef with five others and released them within an hour.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, Gan Island’s Council President Shiyam said that police officers had obstructed the protesters under the direct order of Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla.

He also acknowledged that if the police would permit the opposition members to travel to Fonadhoo island, they could verify that the MP does not have the support of the people, adding that Raheem evidently does not even have the support of the islanders from his own constituency.
