Detained member of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Abdulla Shaheem was brought to the capital Malé City for medical purposes on Monday.

The MDP National Council member was arrested on 16th February, under the state of emergency declared by President Abdulla Yameen on 5th February.

He was brought to Malé for treatment, for injuries sustained during arrest including a dislocated shoulder and swollen knee.

According to his wife, Shaheem was treated at the police’s clinic, “Noosandha”.

While her husband’s shoulder was dislocated during the arrest, Minaam said that because of him being pushed down to the ground, Shaheem had sustained injuries to his left knee. She added that he was preparing to undergo a knee operation, because of an injury sustained previously.

However, noting that he was able to walk normally prior to his arrest, she said that he “is now limping”, adding that this is “what the government of Maldives has reduced my husband to”.

In a tweet posted later, Minaam said that Shaheem has been “abducted, tortured and brought to a police clinic after more than two weeks of detention under the guise of a doubtful state of emergency, barely able to walk”.

“If they send Shaheem back to detention, it will be the greatest shame of this farce of a government,” added Minaam.

Minaam has filed a case with the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), regarding her concerns over her husband’s health.
