The Prosecutor General’s Office has said that it is reviewing the case forwarded by the Maldives Police Service, against former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Justice Ali Hameed.
The case was sent for prosecution on 28th February.
While the three were arrested for plotting a coup, police are seeking to charge them with ‘destroying evidence’.
Speaking to RaajjeMV on Sunday, media official at the PG Office said that the case “is under review,” and that a decision on charging them will be made after.
The former president was arrested at his home right after the government declared a state of emergency on February 5, and the two justices were arrested later at the Supreme Court.
Police previously said that they had gathered evidence which showed that Gayoom, his son MP Faris Maumoon, and son-in-law Mohamed Nadheem had bribed the Supreme Court justices.
While the state of emergency was extended through parliament on 20th February, in a vote held without the constitutionally required quorum of 43 members, there have been reports that Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham does not believe that the exension is valid. She is to have ordered officers to release those arrested under the state of emergency decree.
