Former President of the Elections Commission, Ahmed Sulaiman has been appointed as the President of the National Integrity Commission (NIC).

President Abdulla Yameen appointed Sulaiman as a member of NIC, as well as its President, on Thursday, at a function held at the President’s Office where the President handed him the letter of appointment.

Following Sulaiman’s resignation from the Elections Commission on 31st January, there were reports that he was to be appointed as NIC President. The position has been vacant since the dismissal of former President Yoosuf Maaniu, who was fired days after accusing senior officials of the Maldives Police Service (MPS) of obstructing an on ongoing investigation into the conduct of law enforcement officers.

The Parliament, on Wednesday, approved Sulaiman to t NIC, with 32 votes. Opposition parliamentarians had boycotted this sitting as well.

The nomination was reviewed by the Committee on Independent Institutions, which gave him a mark of 75.89, barely passing the required 75-point mark.
