Parliament approves Sulaiman to National Integrity Commission
Opposition parliamentarians boycotted Wednesday's sitting
Sulaiman received a mark of 75.89, barely passing the 75-point mark for approval
He resigned from the Elections Commission on 31st January, reportedly on the order of President Yameen

The Parliament has, on Wednesday, approved President’s nominee, Ahmed Sulaiman, to the National Integrity Commission (NIC).

32 parliamentarians voted in favor of the appointment, while opposition members boycotted the sitting.

The nomination was reviewed by the Committee on Independent Institutions, which gave him a mark of 75.89, barely passing the 75-point mark for approval.

Sulaiman, who is the former President of the Elections Commission, was nominated to NIC by President Abdulla Yameen, and the nomination was sent to parliament on Monday.

He resigned from the Elections Commission on 31st January, and was a senior official of the political party, People’s Alliance, established by the incumbent President.

A seat at the National Integrity Commission has been vacant since November 2017, following the dismissal of the Commission President, Yoosuf Maaniu. He was fired days after accusing senior officials of the Maldives Police Service (MPS) of obstructing an on ongoing investigation into the conduct of law enforcement officers.
