EU to consider 'targeted measures' on Maldives officials, 'if situation does not improve'
It adopted the conclusions without debate
It also expressed concern over the security of "foreign residents and visitors, including tourists"
EU said it “is ready to support UN facilitation of such a dialogue”

The European Union (EU) has said that it will consider “targeted measures” on Maldivian officials, “if the situation does not improve”.

The Council of the European Union adopted a number of conclusions on the Maldives situation on Monday, and called on the authorities “to immediately lift the state of emergency, and restore all constitutionally guaranteed rights”.

“The Council calls upon Maldivian authorities to respect the rule of law, and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the freedom of expression and the right to fair trial,” adding that it condemned the “politically motivated arrests” and called for the immediate release of all political prisoners.

The Council also condemned “any interference with the work of the Supreme Court of the Maldives and actions taken against the judiciary and the judges”.

It also expressed concern over the possible impact the current situation could have on the “security of foreign residents and visitors, including tourists”.

Noting that the current situation in Maldives “is not in accordance with the principles of democratic rule and separation of powers,” the Council said that “if the situation does not improve, the Council may therefore consider targeted measures”.

It further called on the government “to engage with the leaders of the opposition in a genuine dialogue that paves the way for credible, transparent and inclusive Presidential elections,” adding that the EU “is ready to support UN facilitation of such a dialogue”.
