Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizzu visited detained former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Justice Ali Hameed on Wednesday.
In a tweet posted after, the minister said that he had visited the three ‘as the President’s envoy,’ to inquire on their health and the state of the cells they are being kept in.
The three – charged with attempting to overthrow the government and bribery – have been in police custody since their arrest on 5th February. They were arrested without court warrants, after declaring a state of emergency in the country.
While the housing minister has revealed that he had met with three high profile detainees, it is yet unclear whether they had legal representation at the time of the meeting.
Former President Maumoon is being detained in Maafushi Prison, while the two justices are being kept at Dhoonidhoo Detention Center. Their attorneys have said that authorities have been attempting to block them from their clients.
