Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim has assured that the party will not do anything that could jeopardize the joint opposition.

In a tweet sent out on Monday, the Maamigilli constituency MP said that a certain individual joining JP, or a member’s belief being different should not threaten the reform work of the joint opposition.

“JP will not allow this to happen,” added its leader.

Leader of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), former President Mohamed Nasheed retweeted Qasim’s tweet, with a simple ‘thank you’.

Qasim’s comments are directed towards reports that the joint opposition is in ‘trouble’ after former home minister Umar Naseer joined Jumhooree Party.

Qasim, currently in self-exile in Germany, has previously addressed the criticism directed towards JP, for accepting the former home minister to the party.

Qasim had said that he wished for the party to welcome all individuals that wanted to join the party.

Sentenced to three years two months and 12 days in prison, Qasim traveled from Singapore to Germany in late November, for medical purposes, despite not having approval from Maldivian authorities. The Home Minister has said that action will be taken against Qasim, as he had traveled to Germany unlawfully.

While JP has formed a coalition with Maldivian Democratic Party, Adhaalath Party and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s faction of the Progressive Party of Maldives, Umar has said that he has no desire to work with MDP.

The party said that it has no intention with working with Umar, with its chairperson Hassan Latheef emphasizing that Umar will not be allowed to ‘meddle’ within party matters.
