Opposition heads to HA. Dhidhdhoo for special rally

The joint opposition is to hold a gathering in Dhidhdhoo island of Haa Alifu atoll this Thursday.

Senior officials began leaving for the gathering on Wednesday, including constituency MP Abdul Latheef.

Latheef received a warm welcome on arrival in Dhihdhoo, despite having been stripped off his parliamentary seat.

Elections Commission (EC) announced that the Dhidhdhoo constituency MP Latheef, elected as an independent, had lost his seat after a Supreme Court ruling that any MP that leaves a party, joins another or is expelled will lose their parliament seats.

While Article 74 of the Constitution notes that "any question concerning the qualifications or removal, or vacating of seat, of a member of the People's Majlis shall be determined by the Supreme Court", the Court is yet to do so.
