Investment in treatment systems for premature infants and newborns battling various medical conditions must be increased: Sajidha

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has emphasized the need to increase investment in advancing the care system for newborns across the Maldives, particularly for premature infants and those suffering from various medical conditions.

The First Lady made this appeal while speaking as the guest of honor at the opening ceremony of "NeoCare 2026: The Maldives Conference on Neonatal Care Excellence," held Monday morning at Meerumaa.

Advocating for the strengthening of neonatal care—specifically for premature infants and newborns facing various health challenges—the First Lady called for increased investment in professional development. She emphasized that alongside rapid technological advancements, it is essential to scale up investments in the human resources responsible for utilizing these tools.

She noted that while specialized facilities, modern equipment, and emerging medical technologies are essential for enhancing neonatal care, skilled healthcare professionals remain the most vital component in delivering effective treatment.

She noted that while a machine can monitor a heartbeat, only a trained healthcare professional can interpret the significance of those rhythms. She further emphasized that even with the most advanced equipment available in a modern neonatal unit, its true potential can only be realized through skilled hands, sound clinical judgment, and the provision of compassionate care.

Highlighting the critical need to enhance technical expertise alongside rapid advancements in healthcare technology, the First Lady called for the provision of continuous training, specialized education, mentorship, and professional development opportunities for healthcare workers across the Maldives.

Highlighting the role of "NeoCare" in supporting this initiative, she noted that 50 delegates representing 19 healthcare facilities across the Maldives are participating in this year's conference. Describing it as an invaluable platform for exchanging knowledge and experience, she emphasized the importance of expanding such opportunities from the capital to the atolls, reaching multiple generations of healthcare professionals.

Furthermore, the First Lady highlighted the importance of Maldives-specific data and research in strengthening neonatal care services and guiding evidence-based decision-making.

She emphasized that every child born in the Maldives must have access to the same standard of care, regardless of their island of origin or personal circumstances. Furthermore, she commended the professional competence, diligence, and compassion of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers who provide vital support to families during their most challenging times.

Highlighting the importance of family-centered care, the First Lady reminded the audience that behind every infant receiving intensive or specialized treatment is a family in need of support, clear information, dignity, respect, and compassion. She further noted that healthcare is not merely about treating patients, but is fundamentally about human care and empathy.

NeoCare 2026 is being held under the theme "Advancing Neonatal Care: From Knowledge to Practice Through Innovation and Collaboration."
