The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has issued a public alert following the discovery of a counterfeit batch of a cancer treatment injection imported into the country.

The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) announced on Wednesday that it has confirmed the import of a counterfeit batch of medication used in cancer treatment.

Urging public vigilance, the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) reported that the counterfeit medication imported into the country is the injection 'Opdivo' (Nivolumab), 10 mg/mL in a 40 mg/4 mL dosage.

The authority stated that the injection was manufactured by Ireland-based 'Swords Laboratories Unlimited Company,' identifying the affected product by batch number 8081399.

The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has announced a ban on the import, sale, and use of this specific batch within the country. The Authority further advised the public to contact their hotline at 7200321 for any additional information regarding this matter.

Furthermore, the World Health Organization (WHO) has issued an alert regarding the circulation of counterfeit versions of "Darzalex" (Daratumumab), a medication used in cancer treatment, which were detected in the Maldives and Mexico during May and June 2026.

Amidst growing concerns over the rise of counterfeit medicine, issues have recently surfaced regarding the absence of Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) officials during the inspection of imported food containers. Despite regulations requiring their presence to ensure food safety, reports indicate that officials have been failing to attend these mandatory inspections. Relevant authorities and officials have yet to comment on the matter.
