A Maldivian was arrested in the capital Malé City, over allegations of conspiring to launch a terror attack in the Maldives.

RaajjeMV understands that the 37-year-old was arrested on the 14th of September, and is accused of working with the Islamic State (IS).

After being presented to the Criminal Court for his remand hearing, police noted that he was conspiring to launch a suicide attack in the country.

While the Court had issued him a 10-day remand, it expires today.

Nearly ten days after his arrest, on Saturday, Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) began a special operation to strengthen security measures at Velana International Airport.

Speaking to some media outlets, Defence Minister Adam Shareef Umar said that the security measures at VIA was increased "in light of the terrorist attacks targeting various airports throughout the world".

He added that the Maldives "has not received any [direct] threats," emphasizing that "this was a precautionary step".
