The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has urged the public to verify that pharmacies are properly licensed and authorized by the authority when purchasing medicines.
Emphasizing the existing regulatory framework, MFDA stated that the commercial importation and sale of medicines in the Maldives are permitted only for entities that are registered and licensed as medicine importers and retailers in accordance with relevant regulations.
The authority further clarified that all pharmacies must be registered with MFDA, and that pharmacy professionals are required to obtain specific authorization in order to practice within these establishments.
MFDA stressed that the sale of medicines without a valid license is strictly prohibited. It also noted that pharmacy professionals are legally required to display their official MFDA-issued Pharmacist ID cards while on duty.
The authority outlined several key guidelines for consumers to follow when purchasing medicines.
Important Considerations Recommended by MFDA:
- Verify Pharmacy License: Ensure that the pharmacy’s license to sell medicines is clearly displayed on the premises.
- Identify Licensed Professionals: Confirm that the person dispensing the medicine is an authorized pharmacist by checking for a valid MFDA-issued Pharmacist ID card.
- Check Expiry Dates: Carefully review the expiration date on the packaging to ensure the medicine is suitable for use.
- Clarify Instructions: Make sure clear, written instructions on how to use the medication are provided and properly explained.
- Assess Packaging Integrity: Check that the medicine is packaged safely and appropriately, including the use of ice packs or proper thermal packaging for cold-chain medicines.
MFDA has underscored that these measures are essential for individual safety and highlighted the importance of personal responsibility when purchasing and using medicines.
The authority also warned that legal action will be taken against pharmacies operating without valid licenses or without authorized pharmacy professionals.
