Russian Oligarch’s $500 Million Megayacht anchored near Dhoonidhoo Island
The USD 500 million mega yacht belonging to sanctioned Russian oligarch Alexei Mordashov has been spotted anchored near Dhoonidhoo.
Journalists from RaajjeMV observed the yacht on Thursday, capturing videos and photographs clearly showing the name “Nord” on its stern.
Robb Report last tracked the yacht as it was heading toward Cape Town, South Africa, before its radar signal disappeared. According to that report, the yacht’s Automatic Identification System (AIS) then stopped transmitting its location and it had remained untraceable since.
A YouTube channel named “ESysman Superyachts,” with two hundred thousand subscribers, recently released footage claiming to show the superyacht “Nord” navigating in the Maldives.
The footage reportedly depicts the 465-foot yacht traveling from Maafushi to the capital Malé City and it has been confirmed that the vessel shown is indeed the “Nord.”
Mordashov, the largest shareholder of the steelmaker Severstal, is widely reported to be Russia’s third-richest individual. After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States imposed sanctions on him.
Mordashov has maintained that he has no role in Russia’s policy-making and has been challenging the sanctions since May of this year.
Despite his claims, Western authorities have continued seizing his assets, similar to actions taken against other sanctioned Russian entities. Italian police impounded his 215-foot superyacht Lady M in March. Reports indicate that Russian billionaires have since been moving their vessels to what they consider “safe” regions.
The Maldives, a member of the United Nations, has publicly condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. During President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to Estonia in January, he affirmed that the Maldives maintains a policy of supporting Ukraine in this conflict.
