Hussain Shaheed to represent Supreme Court in JSC

Hussain Shaheed has been appointed to represent the Supreme Court in the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

However, Judge Shaheed has not been officially appointed to the JSC yet.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, a reliable source revealed that discussions were held regarding who would represent the Supreme Court in JSC, and that Hussain Shaheed has been appointed as the judge to represent the Supreme Court. The source revealed that this decision was reached on Wednesday.

Earlier, Husnu Al Suood was the member representing the Supreme Court bench in JSC. However, on 4 March 2025, Supreme Court Justice Husnu Al Suood resigned, stating that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had violated the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives.

Hussain Shaheed, the Chief Judge of the High Court, was appointed as a Justice of the Supreme Court on 19 March 2025. The People's Majlis approved the appointment of High Court Chief Justice Hussain Shaheed as a Justice of the Supreme Court the same day.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu was advised to appoint Shaheed to the Supreme Court by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC). When applications were opened for the Supreme Court Justice position, former Deputy Prosecutor General Mariyam Nihayath and lawyer Rushdullah Ibrahim also applied.

The Supreme Court consists of Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan, Justice Dr. Azmiralda Zahir, Justice Mahaz Ali Zahir, Justice Aisha Shujoon Mohamed, Justice Ali Rasheed Hussain, and Justice Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim.

Among these justices, Mahaz and Azmiralda are currently under suspension.

The justices were suspended on 26 February 2025, during the investigation of specific cases, just as they were about to begin hearings on a case challenging the constitutional amendment that allows removal of lawmakers from their seats for floor crossing.
