Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has launched an investigation into disciplinary cases against three suspended Supreme Court justices.
The three suspended justices are justice Husnu Al Suood, justice Mahaz Ali Zahir and Dr. Azmiralda Zahir.
The three justices were suspended on Wednesday, 26 February 2025, in connection with a case being investigated by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The JSC has stated that the justices were suspended after the ACC informed the commission via letter that they are investigating a corruption case related to the justices.
The justices on the commission representing the courts did not have time to attend the emergency meeting held at JSC to decide on the suspension.
According to information received, the disciplinary case being investigated regarding Supreme Court Justice Husnu Al Suood involves allegations that he summoned former High Court Assistant Registrar Hussain Mohamed Haneef to the Supreme Court and spoke to him using inappropriate language.
The ethical case being investigated regarding Supreme Court Justice Dr. Azmiralda Zahir concerns allegations of her influencing a detention order related to her husband.
Some media outlets have reported that the disciplinary case being investigated against Supreme Court Justice Mahaz Ali Zahir is related to a matter of intimidation of a judge.
Many lawyers continue to say that the amendment brought to the Courts Act on Wednesday to dismiss the Supreme Court justices is unconstitutional.
On Thursday, a group of lawyers headed to JSC to seek additional information regarding the case of three suspended Supreme Court justices.
The lawyers requested clarification on whether the lawyer representing the Bar Council at the commission participated in the meeting where the suspension of the three Supreme Court justices was discussed, and how they voted. They have also submitted a letter requesting details of said meeting.
