Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and current President of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Abdulla Shahid has slammed the incumbent administration for failing to show sympathy towards the people amid escalating crisis.

Speaking to RaajjeMV during the door-to-door campaign held on Thursday as part of the “Fudhijje, Fundijje” rally organized by the main opposition party, Shahid stressed that as the situation in the Maldives continues to deteriorate, the government does not seem to be looking at the citizens with the smallest bit of sympathy.

The former minister said that the rally was being held to send a message to the government. Noting that the government has greatly impoverished the citizens, Shahid heavily criticized the government. He also said that the rally would voice the difficult conditions the citizens are living in, to the government. In addition to this, Shahid said that the government is destroying major industries and turning the Maldivian economy into a “game”. Shahid said that the government does nothing but “lie upon lie”. As a result, he said that the citizens are unanimously saying "Enough!".

Further, Shahid said that it is necessary to attend the rally held by MDP, slated for January 31, to clearly voice this message to the government.

MDP said that the door-to-door campaign will continue uninterrupted until January 31. MDP continues to stress the importance of participating in the walk and raising voices, and the need to voice the public's dissatisfaction with the government.

MDP’s National Congress passed the resolution to take to the streets in defense of the Constitution on 9 January 2025. The main opposition political party, MDP, decided to take to the streets after proposing and passing it at the National Congress meeting held by the party. At this meeting, the chair proposed to take to the streets on 31 January 2025 "in defense of the Constitution". The gathering is planned to be held as a walk.
