Yoonus Ali, who represented the Holhudhoo constituency as a member of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in the 19th People’s Majlis assembly, has stated that he was added to the main ruling People's National Congress (PNC) without his knowledge.
Yoonus said he learned about this when he received a text message from the Elections Commission of Maldives.
Yoonus, who is registered in the MDP registry, said the message stated that the commission had received a membership form for a political party submitted using his mobile number, and requested him to log into the ECM My Portal to verify if any submission had been made in his name.
Yoonus said he had not filled out any form to change parties.
While many cases have surfaced of a large number of members registered in the MDP being secretly transferred to PNC, these include a current lawmaker affiliated with MDP, some former parliamentarians, and members of the party's national congress.
