Members of Parliament, Ahmed Ameeth and Saud Hussain have been charged with obstruction and trespassing.
The MPs for Maduvvari and Villingilli constituencies, who are under police custody, were brought to the Criminal Court on Wednesday evening for separate remand hearings, where it was revealed that the Prosecutor General (PG) Office has levied obstruction and trespassing charges against them.
An additional charge has been raised against MP Saud; terrorism charges were raised against the lawmaker for allegedly conspiring to murder High Court Judge Shujau Usman.
Following their arrest, both were initially remanded for 15 days, with the Criminal Court extending their remand by four days on 12th August. They were given an additional four days on Wednesday.
They were both arrested on July 27, for entering the Parliament premises on 24th July with a number of other opposition parliamentarians despite the parliament lockdown. They were charged with obstruction 'for breaking police ranks', with trespassing charges raised against them for entering the Parliament premises that day, despite Elections Commission declaring them no longer Members of Parliament, following a controversial Supreme Court ruling.
The Supreme Court ruling states that MPs who switch parties, quit or is expelled after winning their parliament seat on a political party ticket, will lose their seats.
