Laiba ‘Elly’ Ahmed Mahloof, a young Maldivian badminton player, has won two medals in a badminton tournament held in Georgia.
Laiba secured the bronze medal in the singles event and silver in the doubles event in the Batumi Cup – Youth International 2024 held in Georgia.
Laiba played in the semifinals of the singles event on Sunday.
She lost to Armenia’s rank number one player Anita in two straight sets.
She lost the first set 23-25 and the second set 13-21.
Laiba’s pair partner in the doubles event was Armenia’s Anita who she competed with in the singles semi-finals.
Top-ranking players from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Kazakhstan and Georgia competed in the tournament.
In early September, Laiba won bronze in a Badminton Europe calendar tournament held in Slovenia.
Laiba secured the bronze medal in the Under-13 doubles category at the Mirna International Youth Tournament in Mirna, Slovenia.
Sharing photos of her achievement on social media platform ‘X’, Laiba expressed gratitude to Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu, Managing Director of State Electric Company (STELCO) and Sony Sports.
In addition to this, the young badminton player extended thanks to her coach and those who supported her.
Laiba has participated in several badminton tournaments and has so far won 14 international medals.
She has secured six medals this year alone.
Laiba also won a medal competing in the Saudi Open held in Saudi Arabia.
