Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb's family has expressed concern over the state continuing to refuse to grant him medical leave, despite the possible threat to his life.

Back in June, the former VP's family had released a statement, saying that Adeeb has developed an internal cyst, kidney stones and vision impairment from glaucoma, since his incarceration in 2015. The family has on multiple occasions said that doctors have said that the cyst could turn cancerous, if not treated.

On Monday, Adeeb's family submitted the medical documents and death certificate of his brother, who had died due to complications from cancer.

His wife, Mariyam Nashwa said that Adeeb's cyst is "in the same spot" as his brother, adding that the 'inhuman' government continues to deny him the opportunity to do the required test, despite the family history.

Nashwa highlighted that Adeeb's brother had died at the age of 33; Adeeb is currently 35.

Noting that Adeeb's cyst was diagnosed at stage three, she said that "is has been more than a year now," since they informed the authorities that doctors had advised him to do the tests.

She further noted that doctors have advised that he be taken abroad to conduct the tests, which are not available in the Maldives.

The former VP was sentenced to a total of 33 years in prison, on multiple charges of graft and terrorism.
