Missing journalist Ahmed Rilwan's nephew and murdered writer Yameen Rasheed's sister have been dismissed from their posts at the Maldives Police Service (MPS) for taking part in the march held to mark the third anniversary since Rilwan's abduction.

Ahmed Joozeen and Aisthath Rasheed were fired on Monday "for taking part in an unlawful gathering".

Speaking to RaajjeMV, Aishath's defence lawyer Safa Shareef stated that her client cannot be fired for taking part in a peaceful gathering, noting Article 19 (c) of the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act.

Article 19 (c) of the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act noted that "taking part in a peaceful assembly would not subject any individual to any civil or criminal prosecution".

A march was held on August 8, demanding answers in the case of missing journalist Ahmed Rilwan, who was last seen on 8th August 2014. Police confirmed his abduction over 600 days after his disappearance. His best friend, and biggest campaigner in the search for Rilwan, Yameen Rasheed was killed in a barbaric attack in the early hours on the 23rd of April.
