MP for Maamigili constituency Qasim Ibrahim has been slammed for his hypocritic remarks blaming the ongoing economic collapse on the administration of former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Speaking at Monday’s sitting of the People’s Majlis, Qasim asserted that the country is currently facing major economic turmoil, resulting in the public having to return to “simpler” means of living.

Qasim said this in response to MP for Hanimaadhoo constituency Abdul Ghafoor Moosa from the former ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) regarding the country’s economy plummeting on a downward spiral.

Speaking at Monday’s sitting, MP Ghafoor stated that the country’s economy was steady when MDP’s presidency ended.

The MDP lawmaker stressed that the downfall of the economy should not be solely pinned as the former administration’s fault.

In response to the statement, an offended Qasim said that the Hanimaadhoo MP's remarks were "absolutely untrue".

Picking up on the disparaging suggestion Minister at the President’s Office Ali Arif recently made to citizens to return to “simpler” means of living by eating traditional “Garudhiya and Rice” meals to weather the ongoing financial crisis in the Maldives, Qasim has said that the people are having to live like this because of the Solih administration.

Several members of the public have flooded social media platform ‘X’, dragging him for accusing the former administration of bringing about the current economic crash when he himself, was a part of the Solih administration.

Slapping him with harsh reminders that he himself was a coalition partner of the Solih administration, the public has accused him of being the biggest government beneficiary.

Enraged citizens have also reminded Qasim that his ministers were offered top government positions on a silver tray and even his spouse was offered a ministerial position.

Noting that Qasim’s Jumhooree Party (JP) ministers remained faithful to the former administration as JP was a coalition partner of the MDP administration up until Solih’s presidential term ended, members of the public have asserted that Qasim needs to take responsibility for misconducts and anything that went wrong in the previous administration, just as much as any other coalition leader.

Commenting on the matter, Former High Commissioner of Maldives to Malaysia, Mohamed ‘Dato’ Zaki claimed that Qasim got significant cuts of tax-payers’ money from the previous administration from the state.

Zaki added that he buys shares from every government, makes profits and then switches up like a true political flip-flopper whenever things do not go his way before joining hands with the next fresh administration.

Lawyer Shahid Abdul Samad remarked that those who make a living by always looking out for their best interest will always suck up to whichever party is in power at the time to make sure things work out for them.

Qasim is someone who raised accusatory questions on the manner in which Muizzu acquired his wealth and even built his residence, before he assumed office as the island nation’s eighth president.

However, like a true flip-flopper Qasim Ibrahim has now joined hands with the incumbent president.

While Qasim’s serial inconsistence has proven to make him a very predictable politician that is unfamiliar with taking accountability, Qasim has defended the Muizzu administration at the People’s Majlis by throwing MDP under the bus with accusations of delivering an economic crisis to the people.
