President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has urged the International Court of Justice (ICJ, UN) to act now, as Gaza lies in ruins, at the hands of Israel.
The president made this appeal in a post on social media platform ‘X’ in light of the scenes currently unfolding in the Gaza Strip, as Israeli armed forces continue to inhumanely attack the innocent civilians of Palestine.
As such, shedding light on the recent attacks on Rafah City by Israeli armed forces, President Muizzu stressed that the scene unfolding especially in Rafah are of despair, displacement and death.
Urging the international community to refrain from remaining silent while Gaza lies in ruins at the hands of Israeli forces, the Maldivian leader asserted that Israel must immediately stop the brutal attacks on the Palestinian people “at once” and comply with international law.
This, the president said, is why ICJ must act now.
Further, he noted that the Maldives fully supports South Africa’s request for additional provisional measures in light of the recent attacks on Rafah.
President Muizzu added that Maldives and its people will continue to stand with the people of Palestine in their struggle for self-determination and their right to an independent state based on the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
We will not rest until Palestinian statehood is a reality, and our brothers and sisters in Palestine are able to live a life of dignity, peace and prosperity.”Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, President of Maldives.
Maldives and its people remain solid in their unwavering commitment and unconditional solidarity with the people of Palestine in their impartial quest to achieve their inherent rights, including the right to self-determination.
Maldives has also continuously reaffirmed its long-standing position that a lasting solution to the conflict can only be achieved through the internationally accepted two-state solution, with the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian State based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Israel declared war on Palestine after Hamas launched a mass military operation into the territory of Israel on October 7 in response to Israeli violation of the Al Aqsa Mosque. Attacks on Palestinians by Israeli settlers have since spiked, with no intention of a ceasefire.
Israel continues to pound the Gaza Strip, with the death toll surpassing 34,900. Among the deceased are mostly women and children and at least 78,000 others have been injured in the wake of the attacks.
