Speaker of People’s Majlis Mohamed Aslam has urged world leaders and legislators to accelerate the transition to low-carbon economies.

He made this appeal while addressing the Third Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network (NAM PN) held in Geneva, Switzerland earlier this week.

The conference was held on the sidelines of the 148th Assembly of the Inter-parliamentary Union (IPU).

Discussions regarding Revitalizing Parliamentary Action in Combating Climate Action saw the Maldivian parliament speaker shedding light on the importance of such actions for the vulnerable and small island states such as the Maldives who are on the frontline of the climate crisis.

Urging world leaders and legislators to accelerate the transition to low-carbon economies, he stressed on the importance of ensuring equitable access to finance for renewable energy initiatives and facilitating the widespread adoption of sustainable technologies.

Noting the importance of enacting legislations that promote sustainability, reduce greenhouse gases to achieve a more resilient and environmentally conscious future, Speaker Aslam touched upon the measures taken to combat climate change and the deteriorating environment at a national level.

Some of these include setting ambitious national targets, making innovative policies in waste management and marine conservation and investments made in renewable energy infrastructure.

Further, Aslam stressed on the importance of parliamentary oversight and accountability in steering the effective implementation of climate policies.

Shedding light on the establishment of a dedicated standing committee on Environment and Climate Change within the People’s Majlis, which mirrors the commitment of the Maldives to this cause, the speaker urged world leaders and legislators to form partnerships across borders and sectors.

He also urged to share resources, knowledge, and increase the collective belief to safeguard the future of the planet.
