An extraordinary sitting of the People’s Majlis has been scheduled for January 28.

The extraordinary parliament sitting is scheduled for 9am, Sunday.

Placed on the agenda for Sunday’s sitting is the introduction of an amendment to the land acquisition act as well as an amendment to the general election act.

In addition to this, some of the submissions to be made by the speaker include changes in the scope of work for three ministries which were established on 17 November 2023 under the powers vested to the president under Article 116 of the Maldives Constitution, regarding the matter on standing committees.

The committees will be submitting a report on findings on the approval of 22 ministers appointed by the president to the cabinet, under powers vested to him under Article 129(a) of the Maldives’ Constitution.

An extraordinary parliament sitting was sought with the signatures of 38 lawmakers.

The decision to introduce an amendment to the Elections Act comes at a time the Elections Commission has revealed that the parliamentary elections 2024 will be held during the fasting month of Ramadan.
