High Commissioner of the Commonwealth of Australia to the Republic of Maldives, David Jessup has paid a courtesy call on Speaker of the People’s Majlis Mohamed Aslam.
The Australian HC called on Speaker Aslam at the People’s Majlis on December 13.
Shedding light on the lasting and significant relations between the two countries, Speaker Aslam acknowledged the historical ties that have strengthened the bilateral partnership, at the meeting.
Further, the Maldivian parliament speaker extended heartfelt gratitude for the generous contributions the Australian government has offered to the education sector of the island nation.
He also expressed gratitude for the unwavering support provided to the People’s Majlis by the Australian government, particularly in supporting Practice Parliament programs.
The speaker went on to express keen interest to foster increased cooperation and engagement between the People’s Majlis and the Australian Parliament, exploring possibilities for exchange visits as well as implementing capacity-building programs for parliament staff.
The meeting also saw Speaker Aslam and the Australian high commissioner expressing mutual commitment to enhance the bonds enjoyed between both countries, and in exploring new avenues for collaboration in the near future.
Further, they also engaged in discussions regarding the upcoming parliamentary elections and the ongoing legislative activities within the Majlis, specifically addressing matters related to the state budget.
Discussions also revolved around gender balance in the parliament.
Speaker Aslam expressed hope for increased representation of female lawmakers.
