17 November 2023 marked a historic day full of hope for Maldivians

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to ensure a balance is maintained between structural and human development.

The newly inaugurated president made this affirmation during his swearing-in ceremony that took place at the Republic Square on Friday evening.

Following his inauguration as the eighth president of the country, the new president delivered his inaugural address, during which he stated that striking a balance between structural and human development would be one of the fundamental policies of his presidential term.

Highlighting that 17 November 2023 marked a historic day full of hope as Maldivians “set sail to return to their homeland”, President Muizzu stated that his goals were to instill morals, religious values, and skills in youth communities, as it would assist in the Maldives' progress and greater prosperity.

Asserting that his administration would uphold the independence of the three branches of government, President Muizzu stated that it would refrain from interfering in the legal system and added that this does not mean that the administration will ignore criminal activity. He pledged that the interference of the President’s Office in the judiciary, “ends here”.

The Maldivian leader stated that the total debt of the state when he assumed office was at MVR 119 billion which is the biggest it has been in the financial history of the island nation.

President Muizzu added that Maldives will remain strong enough to overcome the economic fallout and announced his decision to take swift steps to deal with the situation.

As such, he expressed hope to complete the Velana International Airport (VIA) project, open of a new modern terminal promptly and the generation of more tourism revenue as well as developing methods for cost reduction.

Declaring that his administration aims to highly prioritize the tourism industry which he described to be one of the strongest pillars of the economy of Maldives, President Muizzu noted that the government aims to develop new approaches to manage and progress the tourism industry.

In addition to this, President Muizzu stated that his administration aims to make living conditions easier including for housing accommodations for workers in the tourism industry.
