Speaker of the People’s Majlis and MP for North Hithadhoo constituency Mohamed Aslam has resigned from his position as leader of the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Parliamentary Group.
Speaking at the parliament sitting held on Tuesday, Aslam announced that he resigned from the post of MDP PG leader, sometime on Monday night.
Aslam was elected as the leader of MDP’s PG group during February 2022, when the main ruling party had super majority in parliament.
The North Hithadhoo lawmaker was elected to the post against Central Henveiru MP Ali Azim, who represented MDP back then. He was elected with the votes of 40 lawmakers.
A total of 65 lawmakers represented MDP in parliament back then.
Aslam’s resignation from the post of MDP PG leader comes at a time he was elected as the new Speaker of Parliament on Monday night, following the resignation of Nasheed.
