Two individuals have been killed in an explosion that rocked Makunudhoo island of Haa Dhaal atoll on Saturday.

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) received reports of the explosion at around sundown on Saturday.

MPS confirmed that two individuals had died in the gas explosion.

Officers of the police institution were dispatched to the scene of the explosion shortly after.

Sources report that the explosion took place near the island’s fish market, located in the southern end of the harbor.

MPS revealed that the two individuals who died in the explosion were employed by the contractor for the land reclamation project to build an airport in Makunudhoo.

This comes at a time an explosion in Kulhudhuffushi Airport critically injured a 37-year-old man, on Thursday.
