Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s Parliamentary Group (PG) has passed to file a no-confidence motion against the former leader of MDP and the Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed.
The proposal to file a no-confidence motion against Nasheed was unanimously passed during the Parliamentary Group's meeting held on Sunday.
The party initially put forward a no-confidence motion against the Speaker and Vice-Speaker of Parliament Eva Abdullah, yet they later withdrew it in the best interests of the party.
MDP tried to cooperate with Nasheed and The Democrats during the second round of the 2023 Presidential Election. However, it was unsuccessful, and the MDP lost the election's second round. MDP then criticized Nasheed and the Democrats as a result.
Nasheed had previously repeatedly called for the withdrawal of the no-confidence motions against either the Speaker or the Vice-Speaker, as both of the motions were filed together.
