Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor has travelled to Singapore for medical treatment.
Maldives Third-way Democrats (MTD) revealed that Adeeb departed to Singapore on Tuesday evening, following the recommendation of several doctors.
MTD had earlier revealed that Adeeb is suffering from a serious and life-threatening medical condition related to neurology.
The ex-Vice President was given authorization to travel overseas for medical treatment by the Maldives Correctional Service on Tuesday.
Adeeb, once the right-hand man of former President Abdulla Yameen, will be monitored by the corrections department as well as the Maldives Police Service (MPS) throughout his trip overseas.
He was allowed to travel for 10 days.
In a Twitter post, the corrections department revealed that they granted Adeeb permission to travel with the recommendations of the medical board, for tests that are currently unavailable in the Maldives.
MCS’s decision comes nearly a week after Adeeb was hospitalized after he lost consciousness, sometime after sundown on July 5.
MTD revealed that he was diagnosed with a serious neurological medical condition after an extensive period of being locked up in solitary confinement from 2015 to 2018 in a cell on a round-the-clock basis for three years.
MTD stressed that his confinement was against all international norms and Maldivian laws that classify such treatment as “inhumane”.
Adeeb, who is under house arrest, was sentenced to 20 years in prison after having been found guilty of the seven counts of charges in connection with the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) embezzlement case, back in October 2020.
Relevant authorities earlier revealed that Adeeb was moved to house arrest due to health issues linked to a respiratory illness.
Adeeb pleaded guilty to the seven charges raised against him during the preliminary stage of the trial.
The seven charges raised against Adeeb were two counts of involvement in corruption, two counts of using his position to gain undue benefits, two charges of money-laundering as well as an abuse of power charge.
Further, he was slapped with a fine totaling MVR two million in addition to the jail sentence.
