The governments of Maldives and Seychelles are to collaborate in addressing security concerns in the Indian Ocean region.
This was announced during a joint statement delivered on Monday, as part of Seychelles’ President Wavel Ramkalawan’s ongoing official visit to the Maldives.
The First Couple of Seychelles arrived in the Maldives on a state visit on Sunday, upon an official invitation by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
In their joint statement, President Solih and President Ramkalawan agreed to collaborate in addressing security concerns in the Indian Ocean region, including emerging threats such as piracy, drug trafficking, terrorism, and illegal fishing.
They went on to shed light on the similarities between the two countries including culture, livelihoods, and ways of living.
Further, they expressed mutual commitment to strengthen bilateral relations and emphasized on the significance of ocean resources to the economies of both countries.
Shedding light on the importance of the security of the Indian Ocean for regional peace and stability, President Solih and the Seychelles’ President identified climate change and its impacts as primary concerns for both countries.
Stressing on the need for cooperation between the two countries to share experiences and address the development challenges of climate change, the Maldivian leader noted that many issues of mutual interest were discussed during their official talks, as were ways to strengthen relations between Maldives and Seychelles.
As part of the Seychelles’ president’s state visit, four agreements were exchanged between the two countries in a bid to facilitate closer ties. Touching upon these agreements, President Solih stated that they aim to promote people-to-people exchanges and interactions.
The significance of increased trade and experience sharing was also discussed.
Highlighting that the Protocol on Cooperation to Combat Transnational Organized Crime and Other Maritime Security and Safety Threats signed on Monday is a significant step towards enhanced collaboration and joint efforts in ensuring regional security, President Solih reaffirmed his commitment to continue the close partnership in addressing issues of mutual interest.
