President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has convened a special meeting with his Cabinet of Ministers to hold discussions regarding the decision by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) on the case regarding the delimitation of the maritime boundary between the Maldives and the Chagos Archipelago.
The meeting was held at the President’s Office on Friday evening.
Extensive discussions were held regarding the outcomes of the tribunal’s hearings, during the cabinet meeting.
Owning to the fact that the tribunal ruled unanimously in favor of the Maldives with regard to the alleged claim by Mauritius to a continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles and went on to agree with the claim by Maldives that the Blenheim reef may not be used as a base point which consecutively accords 47,232 square kilo meters – the larger portion of the overlapping area – to the Maldives, the Maldivian government considers that the ITLOS Special Chamber concluded “favorably” for the Maldives.
ITLOS on Friday afternoon ruled that the Maldives will acquire a major sea-region, over the Chagos Archipelago issue.
There is an area of about 95,000 square kilometers between the Maldives and the Chagos Archipelago, which is not covered by 200 nautical miles.
