Family of Imran Abdulla, leader of Adhaalath Party, has said that he is being kept in the death row unit in Maafushi Prison.

The family has sent a letter to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) on Sunday, seeking to investigate the matter.

The letter was signed by Imran's wife, Maryam Reema, and noted that he is being treated 'in a way no individual should be treated'.

The Adhaalath Party leader was taken back to prison on Friday, after having been transferred to house arrest for Ramadan.

In addition to Imran's family, the opposition have also expressed concern over his treatment in prison.

According to Ali Zahir, vice president of Adhaalath, Sheikh Imran was transferred to an ordinary cell. He was previously kept in the Special Protection Unit.

While reports indicate that he is currently being kept in the cell adjacent to the one occupied by Hamid Ismail- one of those arrested in connection the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) graft- Imran had spoken to RaajjeTV before his transfer back to prison.

Imran was sentenced to 12 years after having been found guilty on terror charges for inciting violence in the May Day protests of 2015. The interview he granted to RaajjeTV on Friday was the first he had given following the guilty verdict.

In this exclusive interview Imran said the crimes of incumbent regime were now becoming clear to public, appealing all to remain steadfast and to be courageous. He said success of the opposition were becoming clear, claiming that victory was imminent.
