All preschools in Fonadhoo island of Laamu atoll are closed on Sunday due to heavy rain, while secondary schools opened at 9 am.

Schools across the country reopened on Sunday, following a nine-day break for Eid al-Fitr.

President of the Fonadhoo Council Ahmed Riyaz said that it started raining at around 9:15 pm on Saturday, and that it had simmered down at around 11:30 pm, adding that the rain had not stopped. He said that the weather got worse around 6:30 am in Sunday.

Riyaz also noted that the roads are still flooded due to the heavy rain, and that the flooding had caused the water to enter some of the houses. He said that the Council, along with the Maldives Police Service were working to control the issue.

The Council noted that there was not much damage to property.

According to the Maldives Meteorological Service, scattered showers with a few thunderstorms are expected over the country, with few heavy showers are expected in some areas.

The weather is expected to continue on Monday as well.
