MP Ismail Mohamed, parliamentary representative for the Hoarafushi constituency has criticized the opposition alliance between former presidents Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Mohamed Nasheed.

In a tweet, he sent out on Wednesday, attached with a photo of Maumoon and Nasheed together, he said ‘everything is bound to end’ and that they are ‘bound to become adversaries soon despite their smiles’.

In another tweet, MP Ismail had also criticized Maumoon for having greeted Nasheed’s Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on its 12th anniversary.

“No matter what you are planning, no one in this country believes you have any sense of integrity or loyalty” he said.

In a series of further tweets, he had described Maumoon as a selfish politician, driven by self-gain alone, and said that he ‘changes points of view to suit circumstances’, adding that his allegiance with Nasheed is bound to fail because of said self-centeredness.

The ruling Progressive Party of Maldives, to which MP Ismail belongs, has been split into two factions since June 2016. One faction remains loyal to Maumoon – its founder and elected leader – while the other follows incumbent President Abdulla Yameen.

Since the split, Maumoon has signed an agreement with opposition parties to ‘prevent corruption and embezzlement within the Government; and to restitute transactions and properties unlawfully seized from citizens by the Government’.

The agreement was signed in March between Nasheed, Maumoon, the Jumhooree Party’s Qasim Ibrahim, and the Adhaalath Party’s Imran Abdulla.

While MP Ismail questioned Maumoon's integrity, he himself as confessed in parliament that he had been a messenger of stolen cash during Vice President Ahmed Adheeb's tenure, in an attempt to further implicate Adheeb in the corruption scandal involving the state-operated Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation.
