President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has reiterated the longstanding solidarity of the Maldivian government and people, with the people of Palestine.

He said this in a message sent to commemorate the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on Tuesday.

the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is marked every year on 29 November since 1978.

The President issues messages on the occasion each year, reaffirming Maldives’ commitment to the plight of the Palestinian people.

In his message this year, President Solih reaffirmed the strong support and unwavering commitment of the people and the government of Maldives to the people and government of Palestine in their quest to achieve their legitimate right to self-determination.

Highlighting that the Palestinian people deserve a life of peace, prosperity and dignity, President Solih assured that the people and government of Maldives stands in solidarity with their sisters and brothers in Palestine in securing their “inalienable” rights.

He further claimed that Maldives “firmly” believes that an internationally-accepted two-state solution is the “only” viable and long-term solution to find lasting peace to the question of Palestine.

This said, President Solih called for the establishment of a sovereign and independent State of Palestine, based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The Maldivian leader added that unilateral measures that go against the grain of this internationally accepted arrangement are regressive and illegal.

As Maldives views the plight and rights of the Palestinian people as an international priority, the president stated that the archipelago nation will continue to steadfastly advocate for full Palestinian statehood and keep reminding the international community of their responsibility to promote and protect the full enjoyment of the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people.
