RaajjeMV has obtained information that a settlement involving the territorial dispute between the Maldives and the Chagos Islands was reached between Maldives and the United Kingdom in 1992.

As such, it was decided to divide the territory equally between the two countries, following negotiations.

RaajjeMV was notified by a credible source that the choice was the result of multiple discussions between the Maldives and the UK.

RaajjeMV is currently seeking additional details about the case.

This material has come to light at a critical time, when the opposition is accusing the current government of attempting to surrender control of the Maldivian territory that extends into the Chagos Archipelago.

Dr. Mohamed Munavvaru, a former Attorney General who is among those criticizing the current administration, was appointed to the office in 1992.

The case of territorial dispute over the area between the Maldives and Chagos Archipelago, was filed by Mauritius to International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITOLS). This is different from the dispute between Mauritius and United Kingdom over the archipelago.

Miuvan Mohamed, Spokesperson at the President's Office noted that there is no political agenda behind the case ongoing at ITOLS.

Miuvan noted that administration is taking into accord the expert opinion of all government institutions, the state legal team as well as the international legal team, in the case.

He stated that the administration is well aware of the all steps taken regarding the case and went on to refute the claims being made regarding the administration's stand in the case.

The administration has stated that the country will not be ceding over any of its territory.

Chagos Archipelago comprises of seven atolls with more than 60 islands. The archipelago is located about 500 kilometers south of the Maldives.
