Diplomatic relations have formally been established between Maldives and Malawi.
The governments of Maldives and Malawi formally established diplomatic ties on 24 September 2022.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid signed the Joint Communiqué formalizing diplomatic relations between the two countries on behalf of the Maldivian government, with Nancy Tembo, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Malawi signing on behalf of Malawi.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that a key priority of the foreign policy of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, remains to foster meaningful partnerships with friendly countries.
With the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries, a path will be paved for new opportunities for Maldives and Malawi to work together bilaterally and multilaterally to achieve common goals in areas of mutual interest.
With a population of approximately 18.63 million, Malawi is a landlocked country in southeastern Africa and is the 182nd country to establish diplomatic relations with Maldives.
