Fire and Rescue officers have quelled a fire that started in an expatriate residence in Malé on Tuesday morning. 

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) said that the fire at Gulhazaaru, in Maafannu ward, had been controlled at around 11:40 am. 

The fire reportedly originated from a gas cylinder, the MNDF said. No one was injured in the injured in the incident. 

A migrant worker resident at the house told RaajjeMV that they had been preparing food for Iftar, the meal taken upon sunset to break fasts, when the fire started at around 10:30 am. 

When the gas cylinder caught fire, the residents had attempted to remove from the house, which caused it spread. 

Some of those resident in the upper floors of the premises, where over 50 people reportedly live, had jumped out of windows to avoid injury in the fire. 

The premises had been storing around 10 cases of eggs, 250 sacks of dhaal, 25 sacks of onions, 12 sacks of rice, 10 sacks of flour, and three sacks of sugar when the fire broke out.
