The International Trade Controls on Endangered Species Act has been ratified.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih ratified the bill (No. 13/2022) on Wednesday, following which it has been publicized in the government gazette.

The bill will come into effect three months from the date of ratification.

The People’s Majlis passed the bill at the 22nd sitting of the second session of 2022, on June 30.

The regulations mandated under the law requires publication within six months of enactment.

Further, the law specifies procedures for trade and transfer of species and their parts and also guarantees protection from unsustainable international trade, which will result in their endangerment and exploitation.

The government highlighted that one of the primary objectives of the act is to implement the “Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora” (CITES), which Maldives has been party to since 2013.
