Thayyib Shaheem summoned to police over allegations of spreading false information

Social media activist Thayyib Shaheem has been summoned to the Maldives Police Service (MPS).
Speaking to RaajjeMV on Sunday, Shaheem said that he received a phone call from the police on Sunday, asking him to present himself to the police headquarters at 1 pm on Monday, for questioning over an ongoing investigation.
Noting that he had inquired on why he was being summoned to police, Shaheem said that he was told that the police are investigating a case where he had “spread false information”. He added that they did not elaborate on how he had been spreading this false information, whether via social media or elsewhere.
Responding to the allegation, Shaheem told RaajjeMV that he has not spread any false information “through any means”.
He was arrested on March 16 on allegations of spreading false information and causing public fear through his carious social media platforms, and kept in remand till April 16, until the High Court ordered his release during the appeal process.
However, Shaheem was released with three conditions; he is prohibited from leaving the country, besmirching the reputation of the government and to assist the police in the investigation. The conditions were applicable for a period of 30 days.
Following his arrest. Shaheem was named as a Prisoner of Conscience by Amnesty International, who said that he was arrest ‘solely for exercising his right to freedom of expression’.
