President Abdulla Yameen has extended this year’s Eid al-Fitr holidays.

President’s Office, on Tuesday, said that if Eid al-Fitr falls on June 25 (Sunday), then the whole week will be declared public holidays.

If Eid falls on June 26 (Monday), the rest of the week will be public holidays, it added.

The two consecutive days following the day of Eid al-Fitr “are predetermined holidays on the occasion of the celebration”, noted the Office.

Government offices are to reopen on July 2.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, started on May 27 this year, and is observed by Muslims as a month of fasting to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran. It is one of the five pillars of Islam.
